How Urdu words are counted
Words are counted wherever there's a space, the same way word processors count them. Urdu sometimes joins parts of a word with an invisible zero-width non-joiner, and that is treated as part of the word, not a break. English words mixed into the text are counted too, and shown separately so you can see the balance.
Sentences end at the Urdu full stop (۔), the Urdu question mark (؟), an exclamation mark, or an English full stop or question mark. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines.
Character limits that matter
- Google Business Profile description: up to 750 characters.
- Google Business Profile post: up to 1,500 characters, though the first 100 or so show in the preview.
- Page titles: Google cuts them by pixel width. Urdu letters are often wider than English, so keep Urdu titles short, and preview them first.
- Meta descriptions: aim for roughly 120 to 150 characters in Urdu.
- SMS: one Urdu SMS holds 70 characters, because Urdu needs Unicode encoding.
Writing Urdu for the web
Many Pakistani searches are typed in Roman Urdu rather than Urdu script, and plenty in English. If you're targeting Urdu searches, include the Urdu terms people actually type, and consider Roman Urdu versions of key phrases too. Our Roman Urdu to Urdu converter helps with a first draft, and the Urdu SERP preview shows how right-to-left titles look in Google.
