How Arabic text is counted

Words are counted at spaces. Attached particles and pronouns (like و and ال) are part of the word they join, so "والكتاب" counts as one word, as it does in word processors. Sentences end at the full stop, the Arabic question mark (؟), the exclamation mark, or the Arabic semicolon (؛).

Diacritics (tashkeel: fatha, damma, kasra, shadda and so on) are separate Unicode characters. Most limits, such as social media counts, include them; most readers don't think of them as letters. Switch the option to see both. The decorative stretching character (tatweel, ـ) is ignored in word lists.

Limits worth knowing

  • Google Business Profile description: up to 750 characters.
  • Page titles: Google cuts them by pixel width; keep Arabic titles short and preview them.
  • Meta descriptions: roughly 120 to 150 characters in Arabic.
  • SMS: one Arabic SMS holds 70 characters, because Arabic needs Unicode encoding.

Arabic for SEO

Arabic searches often use different words from a direct translation of your English keywords, and Gulf dialect terms can differ from Modern Standard Arabic. Research the Arabic phrases people actually search for, and give Arabic pages their own URLs with proper hreflang tags. Our canonical and hreflang checker tests that setup, and our SEO services cover bilingual sites.

Questions

About the arabic Word Counter.

Are diacritics counted as characters?

You choose. With the option on, tashkeel marks count as characters, as they do on most social platforms. With it off, only letters, digits, spaces and punctuation are counted.

Is "و" counted as a separate word?

Only when it stands alone with spaces around it. Attached to a word, as in "والكتاب", it is part of that word.

How is reading time worked out?

At about 140 words a minute, in line with published research on Arabic reading speed. Treat it as a guide.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything is counted in your browser.

Does it work for Persian or Urdu?

Word and character counts work for any Arabic-script language. For Urdu, our Urdu word counter also understands the Urdu full stop.
