Brand properties

Web 2.0 backlinks that read as brand publishing, not link spam

Brand blogs on the platforms people actually read, carrying original writing that stands on its own. Publishing, not link spam dressed up as publishing.

Why this option

When it's the right call.

Web 2.0 properties are blogs you own on someone else's platform. The bulk version, dozens of throwaway blogs holding spun articles, has been worthless for years and is easy to spot. The version that still works is simply publishing: a small number of properly maintained brand blogs with original articles that a reader would finish. That is slower and costs more per property, and it is the only version we will build.

  • You want a brand presence on platforms with their own readerships
  • You produce, or want us to produce, writing worth publishing
  • You want properties you control that are not on your own domain
  • You would rather have four real blogs than forty empty ones
Who it's for

A good fit if…

  • Businesses with expertise worth writing down, in any sector
  • Brands wanting a presence on Medium or Blogger for reach as well as SEO
  • Companies whose own blog is new and needs company
  • Agencies wanting properties built to a standard a client can be shown
Probably not, if

Maybe look elsewhere if…

  • If you want thirty properties this month, we cannot do it and would not
  • If you have no expertise to publish and no budget for writing, skip this
  • If your own blog is empty, publish there first, that content ranks for you directly
What you get

What's included.

  • Properties set up properly on the platforms that still carry weight
  • Original articles written for each, never spun and never duplicated
  • Consistent brand presentation, bio, links and imagery across properties
  • Natural internal and outbound linking, including to sources that are not you
  • A contextual link back to the most relevant page on your site
  • Accounts and passwords handed to you at the end
Under the hood

How we actually build it.

The detail that separates a page that ranks and converts from one that just exists.

Original writing is the entire difference

Spun content, one article rewritten by software into twenty variants, is what killed the reputation of this tactic. Detection of it is mature, and a property carrying it is worth nothing at best and a liability at worst.

Every article we publish is written once, for that property, to be read. It means four properties rather than forty for the same budget, and the four keep working while the forty would have decayed.

A property is a publication, not a link holder

Properties that last look like publications: a filled-out profile, a real bio, a picture, several posts spread over time, and outbound links to sources other than the client. A blog whose every post links only to one commercial site is transparently not a blog.

We publish over weeks rather than in one sitting, and we link out to genuinely relevant sources. Both are things a real publication does, and neither can be faked by volume.

Choosing platforms honestly

Blogger, WordPress.com, Medium and Tumblr still have real audiences and real indexation. Many of the platforms sold in bulk packages have long since deindexed user content, added blanket nofollow, or closed to new accounts entirely.

We tell you which platform each property is on and what the link attribute is. Several are nofollow, which we will not hide: the reach and the brand surface are the point on those, not the link.

You hold the keys

Every account is created with your details and handed over with credentials. Properties held on agency accounts disappear when the relationship ends, taking the links with them, which is one of the more common ways a link profile quietly collapses.

If you later want to stop, you can keep publishing yourself or take everything down. Both should be your decision.

Avoid these

Common mistakes we don't make.

  • Publishing spun or lightly reworded versions of the same article everywhere
  • Creating dozens of properties in a day and never posting again
  • Linking only to the client, from every post, with commercial anchor text
  • Leaving profiles empty, with no bio, image or description
  • Using platforms that deindexed user content years ago
  • Holding the accounts on the agency side so the client can never take over

Questions

Before you get in touch.

Do Web 2.0 backlinks still work?

The bulk version does not, and has not for years. Genuine brand blogs with original articles on platforms that still index user content do get read, do get indexed, and do contribute. The tactic did not die; the shortcut did.

How many properties should I have?

Between two and six, maintained, is a sensible range for almost every business. If someone is offering fifty, they are offering the version that does not work.

Are the links dofollow?

Some are, several are not. Medium and Tumblr apply nofollow; Blogger and WordPress.com vary by configuration. We record the attribute for each so you know exactly what you have rather than assuming.

Who writes the articles?

We do, unless you would rather. What we will not do is publish spun text or reuse an article across properties, because that is what makes the whole set worthless.

What happens if I stop?

You keep the accounts and the credentials. The properties stay up and you can keep publishing or leave them as they are. Nothing disappears because we stopped being involved.
