Foundational links

Foundational backlinks that make your brand verifiable everywhere

The listings, profiles and records that prove your business is real and consistent. Unglamorous, foundational, and the reason everything you do afterwards works better.

Why this option

When it's the right call.

Before a search engine can rank you, it has to be confident about who you are. It builds that confidence by cross-checking independent sources: business directories, social profiles, industry bodies, data aggregators. When those sources agree, you are a known entity. When they disagree, or barely exist, every other signal you send has to work harder. Foundational links are how you settle that question, and they are the cheapest work in SEO with the longest shelf life.

  • Your business details differ between listings, or several are simply wrong
  • You are a new business with almost no footprint outside your own site
  • You have rebranded, moved, or changed phone numbers and never cleaned up
  • You want a base in place before spending on placements or outreach
Who it's for

A good fit if…

  • New businesses that need a footprint from a standing start
  • Established businesses whose details have drifted over the years
  • Anyone who has moved premises, rebranded, or changed trading name
  • Franchises and multi-brand groups needing one consistent record per entity
  • Businesses that are not local, foundational work is not only for map-pack SEO
Probably not, if

Maybe look elsewhere if…

  • If your only goal is map-pack position in one town, citation building is the tighter fit
  • If your foundation is already clean, this is not where your next win is
  • If you expect foundational links to move competitive commercial rankings on their own, they will not
What you get

What's included.

  • An audit of every existing listing, profile and mention we can find
  • Corrections to every inconsistent name, address, phone or URL
  • Duplicate and abandoned listing cleanup, including ones you have lost access to
  • New listings across general, industry and regional sources that still carry weight
  • Branded profiles on the platforms search engines treat as identity records
  • A documented master record so every future listing matches without guesswork
Under the hood

How we actually build it.

The detail that separates a page that ranks and converts from one that just exists.

Consistency beats quantity, by a wide margin

Two hundred listings that disagree about your suite number are worse than forty that agree. Conflicting records force a search engine to pick a version or hold off on confidence altogether, and the second outcome is the common one.

We start by finding the disagreements, not by submitting anywhere new. In most audits the single highest-value action is fixing what already exists, which is also the part a volume package will never do because it is slow and cannot be sold by the hundred.

Aggregators first, because everything downstream copies them

A handful of data providers supply business information to hundreds of smaller directories, apps and voice assistants. Correcting a record at that level propagates outward for months without further work, while correcting the same detail on one small directory fixes exactly one page.

So we handle the aggregators before anything else, then work down. It means the visible listing count moves slowly in the first weeks and then accelerates, which is worth knowing before you look at the report and wonder what you paid for.

Most of these are nofollow, and that is fine

Foundational links overwhelmingly carry rel="nofollow", so they pass no PageRank. This is where the market is most dishonest: packages are sold on authority they cannot deliver. What they do deliver is corroboration, and corroboration is a prerequisite rather than a bonus.

We record the attribute against every link so you can see the split. If you want links that pass authority, that is outreach and placement work, and it is a different budget with a different timeline.

A master record you keep

At the end you get one document with the exact strings to use everywhere: legal name, trading name, address format, phone, categories, description at three lengths, hours, and the logo files. Every future listing your team creates matches without anyone having to decide.

This is the deliverable clients tell us they still use years later, and the one that stops the drift from starting again the moment we stop.

Avoid these

Common mistakes we don't make.

  • Submitting new listings before fixing the contradictory ones already out there
  • Using a tracking number on listings, which breaks the consistency the whole exercise depends on
  • Abandoning duplicates instead of claiming and merging them properly
  • Buying bulk directory submissions to sites nobody has visited since 2011
  • Letting each staff member write the address their own way
  • Treating foundational work as a one-off when details drift every time something changes

Questions

Before you get in touch.

How is this different from citation building?

Citation building is the local-search cut of the same discipline: NAP consistency across the directories that feed the map pack, aimed at ranking in a specific area. Foundational backlinks are broader, brand profiles, industry bodies, aggregators and identity records, and they matter whether or not you serve a local area. If you are a local business, start with citations.

Do these actually pass any authority?

Mostly no. The large majority are nofollow. Their job is to make your business verifiable and consistent, which is a precondition for other signals working rather than a ranking boost in itself. We show the attribute for every link so you can judge it yourself.

What if I have lost access to an old listing?

Common, and usually recoverable. Most platforms have a claim or ownership dispute process, and we run it. Where a listing genuinely cannot be recovered, we get it suppressed or merged into the correct one instead.

Will this help if I am not a local business?

Yes, though differently. A national or online-only business still benefits from consistent brand profiles, industry listings and identity records. What it does not need is the geographic directory work, so we drop that part rather than charging you for it.

How long does the build take?

The audit takes about a week. Corrections and submissions run over three to six weeks, and aggregator changes continue propagating for a couple of months after that, so the listing count keeps rising after our work finishes.
