What an IP address is
An IP address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet, so websites know where to send what you asked for. The one shown here is your public IP: the address of your router or your mobile network, shared by every device behind it. Inside your home or office, each device also has a private IP (often starting 192.168.) that the outside world never sees.
IPv4 and IPv6
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42. There are only about four billion, which ran out years ago, so providers share them between many customers. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1 and there are effectively unlimited. If you see an IPv6 address, your network supports it; most connections now use both.
Why your IP changes
- Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic IP that changes from time to time, or when the router restarts.
- Mobile networks often share one IP between many users.
- A VPN or proxy replaces your IP with one of theirs.
- If you need a fixed address, to log into a server or office network for example, ask your provider for a static IP.
What websites can tell from your IP
An IP address gives a rough location, usually the city or region of your internet provider, and the provider's name. It doesn't reveal your name or exact address. Websites also see the browser details shown below. We show your IP here and discard it; we use a one-way hashed version for a few minutes only to stop abuse of our tools. For a look at another address, try our reverse DNS lookup.
About the what Is My IP Address?.
What is my public IP address?
It is shown at the top of this page. It is the address websites see when you connect, shared by every device on your network.
Is my IP address private information?
Every website you visit sees it. On its own it shows only your internet provider and rough area, not your name or home address.
Why is my IP different on my phone?
On mobile data your phone uses the mobile network's IP. On Wi-Fi it shares your router's IP.
Can you show my IP location?
Not yet. An IP location lookup is planned for a later batch of tools.
Do you store my IP address?
This tool only shows it to you. To stop abuse, a one-way hash of it is kept for about a day. Like any website, our host's standard server logs also record visitors' IP addresses for about 30 days.
