How to use the ROAS Calculator
- Choose your currency and enter your total ad spend for the period.
- Enter the revenue those ads brought in. Your Google Ads or Meta Ads Manager reports it if conversion tracking is set up.
- Add your profit margin: the share of each sale left after product and delivery costs.
- Read your ROAS, real profit and break-even point. Switch to "Plan a campaign" to work out targets before you spend.
What ROAS means
ROAS, return on ad spend, is the revenue your ads brought in divided by what you spent on them. Spend $1,000 and make $4,000 in sales and your ROAS is 4, often written 4x or 400%.
It's the quickest way to compare campaigns, ad sets and channels. But ROAS measures revenue, not profit, and that difference is where many businesses lose money without noticing.
Break-even ROAS: the number that matters
If you keep 25% of each sale after product and delivery costs, then $4 of sales leaves you $1 of profit before ads. To cover $1 of advertising you need $4 of sales, so your break-even ROAS is 4. Anything below 4 loses money, even though it looks like a "good" ROAS.
The formula is simple: break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ profit margin. A 50% margin breaks even at 2x, a 20% margin at 5x. Knowing yours tells you which campaigns to scale and which to cut.
What is a good ROAS?
There's no universal number. Across e-commerce, 3x to 4x is often quoted as healthy, but a business with high margins can grow profitably at 2x while a low-margin store may need 6x or more. Service businesses should also think about lifetime value: a customer who books every year is worth far more than their first invoice.
How to raise ROAS
- Fix tracking first. Many accounts under-report sales, or count the same sale twice.
- Send ads to a focused landing page, not your home page. Better conversion rates lift ROAS without spending more.
- Cut search terms and audiences that spend without converting.
- Raise average order value with bundles or minimum orders for free delivery.
- Bring back past visitors with remarketing, which usually converts far better than cold traffic.
About the ROAS Calculator.
How do you calculate ROAS?
ROAS = revenue from ads ÷ ad spend. For example, $5,000 of sales from $1,000 of ads is a ROAS of 5, or 500%.
What is break-even ROAS?
The ROAS at which ads exactly pay for themselves after product costs. It equals 1 divided by your profit margin: a 25% margin breaks even at a ROAS of 4.
What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?
ROAS compares revenue to ad spend. ROI compares profit to cost. A campaign can have a high ROAS and still lose money if margins are thin, which ROI shows.
What is a good ROAS for Google Ads or Meta ads?
It depends on your margin. Many e-commerce businesses aim for 3x to 4x, but the only number that tells you if you are profitable is your own break-even ROAS.
