How PayPal fees work

For a commercial payment, PayPal takes a percentage of the amount plus a small fixed fee in the currency received. The default here is PayPal's standard US rate for card and PayPal checkout payments, 3.49% plus $0.49. Payments from a buyer in another country usually add an international fee (around 1.5% in the US), and converting currencies adds a further margin on the exchange rate.

Rates differ by country, by account type and by how the buyer pays, and PayPal changes them from time to time. Always check the "merchant fees" page for your country and edit the rates here to match.

Invoicing so you receive the full amount

To receive exactly $500 you can't simply add 3.49%, because the fee is charged on the larger total too. The right formula is: invoice = (amount + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage). That's what the "I want to receive" mode calculates. Check your contract and PayPal's rules before passing fees on to buyers: some regions and card schemes restrict surcharging.

Payments in Pakistan

PayPal doesn't support receiving payments in Pakistan. Freelancers and businesses here usually use Payoneer, Wise, direct bank transfer, or local gateways such as JazzCash, Easypaisa and card processors for local sales. Fees on those work in a similar way: a percentage, sometimes a fixed fee, and a currency conversion margin. Set the rates here to match whichever you use.

If you sell online, the payment options on your own website matter as much as the fees. Our WooCommerce development service sets up local and international payments properly.
