Technical SEO & website checks

Page size and compression checker.

Find out how much a page weighs when it's downloaded: the HTML, stylesheets, scripts, images and fonts, as actually sent over the network. See the biggest files and whether gzip or Brotli compression is switched on.

Takes up to 15 seconds: we download the page and up to 40 of its files.

How to use the page Size & GZIP Compression Checker

  1. Enter the page address. Your home page is usually the heaviest.
  2. We download the HTML, then up to 40 of its stylesheets, scripts, images and fonts in parallel.
  3. Check compression and the total weight first.
  4. Then work down the largest files: those are your quickest savings.

Why page weight matters

Every kilobyte has to travel to your visitor's phone, often over a mobile connection. Heavy pages load slowly, use up data plans and drain batteries, and slow pages lose visitors: the longer the wait, the more people give up. Page speed is also part of Google's page experience signals through Core Web Vitals.

A reasonable target for a small business page is under 1.5 MB in total, and well under 1 MB is better on mobile.

Compression: the free win

Text files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SVG) shrink by 70% or more when compressed with gzip or Brotli, and every modern browser handles it automatically. It's a server setting, often a single switch. On cPanel hosting it's usually under "Optimize Website"; on Cloudflare it's on by default. Images and fonts are already compressed, so don't gain from it.

Where the weight usually comes from

  • Images uploaded straight from a camera or phone, several megabytes each. Resize to the size shown and convert to WebP.
  • Sliders and galleries loading every image at once.
  • Page builders and multipurpose themes loading scripts for features the page doesn't use.
  • Plugins that each add their own CSS and JavaScript to every page.
  • Chat widgets, video embeds and multiple tracking tags from third parties.
  • Several font families and weights.

What this tool measures

We measure the files referenced in the page HTML, as sent over the network, up to 40 files. Images loaded later by scripts, lazy-loaded below the fold, or pulled in from CSS aren't counted, so the real total can be higher. For a complete picture of real-world speed, use Google PageSpeed Insights alongside this. If the numbers are bad, our speed optimisation service fixes them.

Questions

About the page Size & GZIP Compression Checker.

What is a good page size?

Under 1.5 MB in total is a reasonable target for a business page, and under 1 MB is better for mobile visitors.

How do I turn on gzip compression?

On cPanel use "Optimize Website" and choose to compress all content. On other Apache hosts, add mod_deflate rules to .htaccess. Cloudflare compresses automatically.

What is the difference between gzip and Brotli?

Both compress text files. Brotli is newer and usually shrinks files 15 to 20% more. Either is far better than none.

Why is the total different from PageSpeed Insights?

PageSpeed loads the page in a real browser, including files added by scripts and lazy-loaded images. We measure the files referenced in the HTML, up to 40 of them.

Are third-party files included?

Yes, scripts and images from other domains referenced in the HTML are measured too, and marked as third party.
