How to use the inches, CM & Pixels Converter
- Enter a width, and a height if you want both.
- Choose the unit you're starting from.
- Choose the DPI: 300 for print, or 96 for screens.
- Read the size in every unit, and check the common sizes table.
Which DPI should you use?
- 300 DPI: standard for quality print, such as business cards, brochures and flyers.
- 150 DPI: large items viewed from further away, such as posters.
- 72 to 100 DPI: banners and billboards, viewed from far away. Ask your printer, since their advice comes first.
- 96 DPI: the CSS standard, where 1 inch equals 96 pixels in web layouts.
DPI doesn't matter for websites
On a screen, only the pixel size matters. A 1200 pixel wide image looks the same whether its file says 72 or 300 DPI, so there's no need to save web images at "72 DPI". Size them with the image resizer instead. For print, it's the reverse: small pixel dimensions can't be saved by setting a high DPI, because no real detail gets added.
Going to print?
Ask your printer for their exact specification. Most want a 3 mm bleed on every side and a safe margin inside the trim, so artwork comes out a little larger than the finished size. Our business card maker sets all this up at 300 DPI, and the SVG to PNG converter exports a logo at any size you've worked out here.
About the inches, CM & Pixels Converter.
How many pixels are in an inch?
It depends on the DPI. At 96 DPI, the web standard, it is 96 pixels. At 300 DPI, the print standard, it is 300 pixels.
How big is A4 in pixels?
At 300 DPI, A4 is 2480 × 3508 pixels. At 96 DPI, it is 794 × 1123 pixels.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI is pixels per inch in a digital image, and DPI is dots per inch in print. People use them interchangeably, and for working out sizes they mean the same thing.
Can I just increase the DPI to make an image print-ready?
Not if the pixel size stays the same. A small image stays small and will print blurry, or print very small. You need a larger original.
How many pixels are in a centimetre?
One inch is 2.54 cm, so divide the DPI by 2.54. At 300 DPI, that is about 118 pixels per centimetre.
