How to use the URL Slug Generator
- Type or paste a title. For several, put one per line.
- Choose whether to remove filler words and set a maximum length.
- Copy the slugs.
- If you're changing the URL of a page that's already live, add a 301 redirect from the old address.
What makes a good URL slug
- Short and descriptive: /services/seo-audit/ beats /services/our-complete-seo-audit-service-for-businesses/.
- Lower case, with hyphens between words. Not underscores, spaces or capitals.
- Contains the main topic or keyword, without stuffing.
- No dates or numbers that will go out of date, unless the page really is about a date.
- Stable: once a page is published, avoid changing its URL.
Do slugs affect SEO?
A little. Words in the URL are a minor relevance signal, and a readable URL gets more clicks when it appears in search results, in shared links and in emails. A clean slug won't lift a weak page, but a messy one (?p=123 or a 15-word string) is a small missed chance on every page.
The bigger risk is changing slugs on established pages. Every change needs a 301 redirect from the old URL, or the rankings and links it built up are lost. Our .htaccess redirect generator writes those redirects for you.
Slugs in other languages
This tool converts accented letters to plain ones (é to e, ü to u) so slugs work everywhere. For Urdu or Arabic pages, an English or Roman Urdu slug is usually the most practical choice: it's readable when shared and avoids the long percent-encoded strings non-Latin URLs turn into.
About the URL Slug Generator.
What is a URL slug?
The part of a URL that identifies a specific page, after the domain. In example.com/services/seo-audit/, the slug is seo-audit.
Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators but reads underscores as joining words.
Should I remove words like "the" and "and"?
Usually, yes. They make slugs longer without adding meaning. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning.
How long should a slug be?
Three to five words is usually enough. There is no strict limit, but shorter slugs are easier to read and share.
Can I change a slug after publishing?
You can, but add a 301 redirect from the old URL so visitors, links and rankings carry over.
