How to use the llms.txt Generator
- Enter your business name and a one-sentence summary of what you do and where.
- Add a short paragraph with the details an assistant should know.
- List your key pages, one per line: title, the address, and a short description, separated by |.
- Download llms.txt and upload it to your site's root folder, so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed standard, published in 2024, for a plain-text markdown file at the root of a website. It gives AI tools a concise, curated map of the site: what the organisation is, and links to the pages that best explain it. Think of it as a short brief for an AI assistant, where robots.txt is a rulebook for crawlers and sitemap.xml is a full list of pages.
It's honest to say adoption is still early. Some AI tools and developer platforms read it; others don't yet. It's quick to make, harmless, and a clear statement of the facts you want repeated about your business.
The format
- An H1 with the name of the site or business (the only required part).
- A blockquote (a line starting with >) with a one-sentence summary.
- Optional paragraphs with more detail.
- H2 sections with lists of links: [Page title](URL): what the page covers.
- An "Optional" section for pages an AI can skip if it's short of space.
What to include
Your main services, prices if you publish them, the areas you serve, your contact page, and the guides that answer your customers' most common questions. Keep descriptions factual and specific: "SEO services for dentists in Lahore, from $400 a month" helps far more than "We are a leading agency". Then check the rest of your AI readiness with our AI search readiness checker, and make sure your robots.txt lets AI search crawlers in.
About the llms.txt Generator.
What is llms.txt?
A proposed standard for a markdown file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that summarises a website and links to its key pages for AI tools.
Do ChatGPT and Google use llms.txt?
Support is still limited and changing. It is a low-effort, low-risk addition, but your normal pages, structured data and reputation matter far more to AI visibility.
Where do I upload llms.txt?
To the root folder of your website (public_html on cPanel), so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt sets rules about what crawlers may visit. llms.txt is a helpful summary and reading list. Neither replaces the other.
How long should it be?
Short. A summary, a few lines of detail and 5 to 20 key links is plenty for most business sites.
