How to use the CPM Calculator

  1. Choose what to calculate: CPM, total cost, or impressions.
  2. Enter the two values you know.
  3. Optionally add a click-through rate to estimate clicks and CPC.
  4. Compare the CPM with other campaigns or channels.

The CPM formula

CPM stands for cost per mille, Latin for thousand. CPM = cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. If a campaign costs $300 and delivers 60,000 impressions, the CPM is $5. Turn it around and cost = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000, or impressions = cost ÷ CPM × 1,000.

An impression is one showing of an ad. One person can see an ad several times, so impressions are usually higher than reach (the number of different people).

What affects CPM

  • Audience: narrow or high-value audiences (business owners, high earners) cost more to reach.
  • Country: CPMs in the US and UK are usually many times higher than in Pakistan.
  • Season: costs rise around Ramadan, Eid, Black Friday and the end of the year, as more advertisers compete.
  • Placement: Instagram Stories, Facebook Feed, YouTube and display networks all price differently.
  • Ad quality: platforms reward ads people engage with by showing them more cheaply.

CPM is not the goal

A low CPM is only good if the people seeing the ad are likely to buy. A cheap audience that never clicks costs more per customer than an expensive one that does. Judge a campaign on its cost per lead or sale, and its return on ad spend. For click-based campaigns, the CPC calculator shows the highest price you can pay per click. If you'd like help, our Meta ads service manages exactly this.

Questions

About the CPM Calculator.

How do you calculate CPM?

CPM = total cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. For example, $250 for 50,000 impressions is a CPM of $5.

What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille, meaning cost per thousand. It is the price of showing an ad 1,000 times.

What is a good CPM?

It varies widely by country, platform, audience and season. Compare against your own past campaigns, and judge by cost per lead or sale rather than CPM alone.

What is the difference between CPM and CPC?

CPM is the cost per thousand views of an ad; CPC is the cost per click. CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000).

Is CPM the same as RPM?

No. CPM is what advertisers pay. RPM (revenue per mille) is what publishers earn per thousand page views or impressions.
